Large Italian-American communities in the Eastern and Great Lakes states.

Thank the Catholics. Back in the 1930's, there was a rampant anti-Catholicism sentiment among the people. So the Catholic powers lobbied hard to get a holiday recognized to increase the church's popularity. They needed someone who was (keep in mind, this was the 1930's) universally liked, and one Cristoforo Colombo (who then had his name Anglicized to Christopher Columbus) became a one-man holiday.

Oh I know, it's common liberal playbook up and down the west coast. Focus on some feelgood initiative that actually does absolutely nothing but raises profile visibility of the politician(s) pushing for the change, garnering approval points from the social justice crowd in the process. Up in Seattle, it was rainbow crosswalks, down here, it's making sure white men who died centuries ago are properly posthumously flogged and replaced with equally deplorable others who fit the right PC mold and whatever it is a given politician might feel will resonate well with anchor babies.

Like, the fact that he never had anything to do with anything currently under the control of the US is completely lost on these people.
History is always modified to fit what someone thinks is important. A good question is: Why do we celebrate a day that had nothing to do directly with the USA?

If we want a "Discoverer's day" we would need to include the Viking landings as well. Why change to an Indigenous day, as that had nothing to do with the discovery?

^The answer to your query is up above.

Sure, the 1930's had polio and prohibition, but sometimes I envy the simplicity with which they lived their lives. "We need another national holiday, and the Catholics are proposing this guy who explored Central and South America. Close enough!"

We'll never see "Discovery Day" to respect the Vikings, because the Odinists aren't a big enough religion to have sufficient lobbying dollars.

Never mind that Dia de la Raza - Columbus Day - is celebrated in almost all Spanish speaking countries including Mexico. Only Venezuela and Costa Rica have dumped it.

Cuba also dumped it.
Why is it no surprise that the city of L.A. is following a policy that Venezuela and Cuba have pursued?

And Democrats called Republicans crazy for thinking their little changes would be a slippery slope leading to something like changing our holidays to tearing down our statues.
