People keep saying they rent big trucks to move for a few hundred dollars but I've called Uhaul, Penske and budget and they're all over $1000 without gas!

Are there secret deals I'm not aware of??

Moving November 15th from SouthBay to Washington state so any info would be super appreciated

Maybe they were talking about in town moves not long distance. Or they were talking about 15 years ago.

Just did some research. It looks like you are getting quotes for truck rentals in LA. Those prices are going to be much higher than other cities (Denver to Seattle $500, SLC to Seattle $300, etc vs $1000 for LA). I moved the pickup location to Bakersfield to see if there was a price drop and it dropped down to $725. You may be able to beat the price if you search other areas outside of LA. There is probably another small city/town outside of LA where the price is cheaper.

That's interesting and I didn't know that. Last month, I rented a 26-foot U-Haul, their biggest. Pickup was in Lancaster and drop off was in Coeur d'Alene. It cost a 'pretty penny'. At least it was a new truck with less than 8,000 miles.

Need to get a smaller truck in about two weeks to take the garage tools and tow the car. I'll check the prices in Bakersfield before reserving. I'll have to get a ride to Bakersfield for the pickup. (Maybe I can take that new super high-speed train we've been paying on for the past few years?) Thanks for the tip.

Update:

Just went to the U-Haul web site to get some rates. For a 15' truck and a 'all-wheels off the ground' auto transport from Bakersfield to Rathdrum, ID is $1416 and from Lancaster to Rathdrum, $1643. That's only a $227 savings. Not sure it is worth the hassle, time, and gas expense to save that amount. I'll think on it.
