Cities in Georgia also don't have to be contained in one county: the City of Atlanta is overwhelmingly in Fulton County, but also has a fair sized piece that is in neighboring Dekalb County (Called locally "Atlanta in Dekalb") that includes many of Atlanta's trendy (Kirkwood, East Lake, East Atlanta) and upscale (Druid Hills) neighborhoods. Of course, counties in Georgia are MUCH smaller to say the least. We have 159 of them! (down from 161 in the 1930's)

If you live in LA, even if it's the Valley, you are very aware you live in the city of Los Angeles. LA City institutions and services are no different in the valley than any other part of th city.......DWP, LAPD, LAFD, LADOT, City Library, LA Unified, etc, etc.

So many people in the Valley consider the rest of the city over the hill to be L.A.

Well that's exactly my point.. do they really know their in LA(city)?

Just recently I talked to a friend of mine, he was boasting on how City of Arleta was the best city and that it felt good not to be part of LA anymore...

Okay, the map blew my mind, and I'm an OC native. All I know for sure any more is that OC is NOT part of the City of Los Angeles. LOL

That may be true in that I often say I'm heading "over the hill" when I'm heading to Downtown, Hollywood, Weho, or the west side.

Several years ago when LA city voters voted on Valley secession, voters in the the west SF valley (Woodland Hills, Canoga Park, Chatsworth, Northridge, North Hills, West Hills, Tarzana, etc.) voted overwhelmingly to succeed from the city of LA. The east Valley (Studio City, North Hollywood, Toluca Lake, Sherman Oaks, Valley Village, etc) voted overwhelmingly to stay part of the city. In the end the secession movement was defeated. Hollywood secession was also on the ballot and lost by a wide margin.

I think people in the east valley feel more connected to the city in that they are closer to downtown, Hollywood, etc. Studio city is only 12 miles from downtown, while Woodland Hills is almost 30 miles away.

I meant that so many people there don’t call the Valley L.A. and only call Hollywood, Downtown, the Westside, etc L.A.

That was a joke. I've always known that. But there are definitely some parts I wouldn't have gotten right if I had to guess, like that long strip down to San Pedro.
