Will be interesting to see what happens with this

UCLA students are attempting to separate from the Westwood Neighborhood Council amid concerns that the group is thwarting affordable housing development in the upscale zip code, Curbed reported.
Graduate Students Association President Michael Skiles announced the plan at a graduate student government event on Wednesday, arguing the students want a greater say in neighborhood issues. The existing council has been “NIMBY and obstructionist” about new housing, Skiles said.
The council’s Land Use and Planning Committee recently opposed a plan to convert a UCLA extension building into housing, and in 2011, it withheld its support for the university’s plan to redevelop four residential properties into student housing. To much of the students’ dismay, the neighborhood group has also consistently opposed efforts to draw nightlife and trendy eateries to the area.

In order to form their own council, students will have to apply to the city’s Department of Neighborhood Empowerment. If approved, it would then go to an election where UCLA students and neighborhood residents could vote

Good.

The Westwood Neighborhood Council has not only been NIMBY about new housing, they have also been NIMBY about what businesses they will allow in the Village - which has led to the Village being so moribund.

Time for some YIMBYs on the westside.

Not good.

How much larger has UCLA grown in recent years such that "affordable housing" is now an issue for students? And why can't UCLA turn one of their dozens of athletic fields into more living space for students? This sounds like a problem with which UCLA needs to contend, not the surrounding neighborhood. Furthermore, even if UCLA has grown significantly in recent years, then they're a victim of their own greed and they have no sympathy from me.

Great. So people who don't have a long term interest in an area get to dictate housing policy to people who do: real residents.

UCLA students are usually there only a few years. The Westwood real residents are there forever and often old. Keep Westwood sleepy because the kids have Hollywood and Santa Monica if they need nightlife.
