I've known several musicians who are household names and they are just regular people

I met them by accident in the 1980's at an 'escape' home in the Northeast that one of them had purchased. I was photographing lake scenery/wildlife and was surprised as hell when one of them walked up on me and casually started to ask me how I was and what I was doing.

He was a guy who had been active in music for years and was still on the charts in the 80's but didn't fit the "celebrity" persona. You never would have guessed it if you didn't know who he was.

I also once embarrassed myself later on in the 90's when Tim McGraw started to become popular. I've never been into country music so didn't know who he was; about the only country star I knew was Johnny Cash. I had a job at the time where I did visual merchandising and distribution of CDs. I was at a record store before it opened finishing up stocking a large display full of Tim McGraw stuff for some promotion they were having and this guy approaches me and starts talking with me. We just talk general stuff and then he asks about country music and I tell him that I'm just not into it, lol.

Another few minutes of pleasant talk and I pack up my stuff to leave and we say bye. I am leaving as the store opens and nearly get run over by a bunch of women who are screaming "Tim!" At that moment I realize that the nice guy I had been talking with was Tim McGraw

As other posters have said, some celebrities don't live in in the LA area (or CA) and simply go there to shoot scenes or record tracks...or whatever else the case might be.

There are tours that are offered I think if you still want to see the houses though.

Having accompanied out of state friends on one of these tours (I think we took Starline), one can see many celebrity homes, as well as hear running commentaries by the tour bus driver. Only in L.A....

There used to be a guy in a lawn chair just off Sunset Blvd selling maps to the stars' homes. Not sure if he's still there. Somewhere near Doheny.

Some celebs I randomly saw:

* Martin Sheen, talking to some homeless guys, outside the Santa Monica 7/11 on Wilshire and 7th. That was in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

* Meryl Streep, walking with a guy on Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade. In the 1990s.

* Hulk Hogan, at LAX. In the 1990s.

* Robert Guillaume, on an American Airlines flight from L.A. to NYC. He was seated in front of me -- flying coach! In the 2000s.

There might be some I forgot.

I've also seen celebs on film and TV sets, and talked to some. John Goodman, Gary Oldman, Dee Wallace, Martin Short. Some others I forget. Not that any of the conversations were very long or interesting.

I've never met your idol, Angelina Jolie.

I saw a couple of basketball players and youtubers, but that's about it. I don't get the fascination of celebrities. They're just ordinary people to me...

You are so right. What's really fun is seeing them in their own home. I've probably appraised over a hundred celebrity homes and you get to learn a lot about people when you see how they live.
