As to who gets affordable housing, it depends...there are different types of subsidized housing. If you are talking about regular Section 8 vouchers they usually have a lottery and draw about 20% of the total applicants, they interview those people and put them on a waiting list.

For subsidized housing for the homeless, if it's supportive housing for the mentally ill, mental health professionals who work with the homeless make referrals based upon how cooperative the person has been in getting treatment and taking medication, and their evaluation of whether the person will be able to follow the rules of a supportive living situation, one screened they are placed on a waiting list for a spot

For the homeless who are not mentally ill, it's quite an involved process and can take up to two years. Here are the requirements for one of the subsidized apartment complexes in Sac
  • Meet H.U.D. definition of “homeless”
  • Six month sobriety before entering the program
  • At least one adult has a disability
  • Referred by another community agency

Meeting the HUD definition of homeless usually requires a referral from a shelter proving that the person has stayed there a substantial number of nights during the past few months. Six months of sobriety generally means that the person spent at least 6 months in a sober living center and has been drug tested regularly. And they need to be disabled and have a referral from an agency that works directly with the homeless. If you do all that stuff you get on the waiting list for housing but there's no guarantee when you will get it.

The elderly and physically disabled have a somewhat easier path to housing but there aren't many senior or disabled units available. Veterans have the easiest time of all, I think the VA kicks in some money and a good deal of private donations to the homeless are earmarked for homeless vets.
Thank you for saying that. The relevant bureaucracy and time prevent "millions" from coming to California to get all this money that is falling from the sky according to certain people. It's a lengthy process.

When I was a boy, on the 4th of July some of the other boys (but never I) would pull the stems off bottle rockets and launch them at homeless people. That's one of the reasons we had far fewer homeless people in the past.

Happy 4th everybody.

Do that today, and whoever does that will rightfully be arrested. And no, that is not why were fewer homeless people. Rents were far cheaper, there were more union jobs, and a whole host of economic conditions were different. College was a lot cheaper too.

You have stated a conclusion without premises, among other sins.

You are right: homelessness is “not one issue” ... however, it is one condition, and not being caused by one common issue doesn’t mean the condition is not solvable.
No. I have not said on a number of occasions that I am a really smart guy. Educated? Perhaps, because it is true (and you are bringing it up, not me). Smart? Not to my recollection have I ever written on this board that I possess a given IQ. Nonetheless, you have some sort of obsession with my intelligence. Please move on. My intelligence or lack thereof is not an issue in this thread. Stop making it one.

Has anyone suggested handing out leaflets to the homeless leading them to Garcetti’s residence?

The Socialists seem to have discovered it .

Protesters demonstrate outside L.A. mayor's house, call for end to homelessness and abolishment of ICE

Listen, OC, I’m not questioning your IQ ... I was referencing how, even though you are a smart guy, your post didn’t make a lick of sense. Which is baffling given your intellect. Maybe you could restate the premeses and conclusion?

And yes, you certainly had quite an exchange with me - probably a year or more ago - in which you were quite pointed in proclaiming your intelligence level as being Mensa ballpark ... though you are probably right about not stating an IQ number. You went on to reference how higher institutions (I don’t recall which ones) were competing for you. I suppose we could look it up. But why? As I said, I really don’t question you on that. You seem smart and well educated enough ... although you frequently don’t appear to be a gifted debater, that doesn’t mean you aren’t highly intelligent. And you know bub, from time to time, in spite of our differences, I remark positively about some of your observations

Anyway, that post you made above? I don’t get it. Maybe because I’m merely a high school 11th grade drop out. But I don’t think so. I think, in this case, you simply didn’t think it out of your conceptualization into a fully cogent statement. And I am actually curious what you really meant to say.

It’s ok man, I’m good. Schooling doesn’t equate to intelligence, as we both know all too well. Anyway, you have my respect.

Santa Clarita passed a law, no one can sit or sleep on sidewalks or sleep in cars on streets, or in public buildings. You can't store your belongs in parks or public spaces.
Violators get fined $100 to $500 if previous infractions.
If our idiot Democrat politicians would do the same it would sure cut down on the problem.

There were more jobs of all sorts including a ton of non union jobs that have either been sent overseas or filled by illegals. yes fewer union jobs too. Ever wonder why the unions do not complain to the politicians they support about jobs going away to... well not citizens that in some cases would be union.
