These were people who had never even stepped foot in the valley and didn't have a clue. It was so pretentious and they were just regurgitating stereotypes they'd heard at one point or another.. 12 years later and all of them have moved back to the midwest because they couldn't afford/hack it. Every damn one.

Obviously from my screen name I'm a fan of the valley. It's always been a bedroom community to the stars and I think a lot of people who aren't familiar with it would be surprised to find out how many entertainment folk lives here. It's not uncommon to see a famous face at the Jamba Juice. It can be because the money goes further - or because it's more suburban there's a perception of more privacy. Is it hotter? Yes. But we have air conditioning and access to swimming pools. It's not unbearably hot THAT often. I think I prefer the quieter pace of life. And that I can find parking easier. Also, a lot of times on the other side of the hill I always feel like there's more ego. More people pretending to be something they aren't. It feels more like a facade. I feel like more people I encounter on a day to day basis feel genuine and authentic here. I respect the hard-working family vibe and proud to call the Valley home.
I'm sure in hindsight, your friends would rather be living in the SFV, than in the Midwest. They can't exactly get to their beloved beach communities in the Midwest, can they?

But for any large major city driving should not be the only option. Where I live I can walk to shopping, dining and entertainment. I can catch public transportation, whether bus, subway or lightrail. I just can't live somewhere where my only option to get around is only a car. I

Property values are the highest they've ever been in the Valley, even in working class neighborhoods like Pacaoima, Sylmar, Arleta, etc.

Yes but that doesn't mean they are better today. Property values are historically high all over the city now .

Some assume higher prices mean there has been gentrification or improvement but not so in L.A.

Whose everyone? Have lived in the Valley twice, Van Nuys(during Northridge) and in Studio City.

Other than getting too hot in the summer, nothing wrong with the Valley. And as others have said the heat there(which still cools down at night) isn't anything compared to places like Phoenix.

Perhaps you just watched the 80's movie "Valley Girl"?

There is no strict definition of those terms, but general ones. I moved here last summer and learned that the valley - to most people - is roughly the area between calabasas, Sylmar and Burbank. Some people in the basin think the Valley goes all the way to Pasadena and Thousand Oaks/Simi (they are wrong).

The basin is geographically roughly from Santa Monica to Whittier to Irvine to Torrance.

Glendale is the farthest east the San Fernando Valley goes. Eagle Rock and Atwater Village are sometimes included in the San Fernando Valley due to their proximity to Glendale and sociocultural similarities to the Valley but they are Northeast L.A.

West of Calabasas you're in the Conejo Valley not the San Fernando Valley.

The San Gabriel Mountains are the northern boundary. Sylmar, Shadow Hills, and Lakeview Terrace being the northernmost Valley neighborhoods, although Sunland and Tujunga are often considered to be in the Valley
