I live in Seattle but am moving to LA this fall. My company has another office located very close to the 405/Wilshire interchange (I know, brutal traffic wise!).

My income is about $88,000 and I have a partner who also works, so we can split rent. I am a gay man who loves walkable, interesting neighborhoods that have character and would be miserable somewhere overly suburban. That said, I also do not want to be living in my car all day as I know LA is all about l iving close to where you work. If I could, I'd be in Silveralke/Loz Feliz/Fairfax District, but have a feeling that is too far away (not my distance, but factoring in rush hour traffic on Santa Monica Boulevard or Wilshire). Santa Monica is a bit too expensive and I don't care for the marine layer climate (I grew up in coastal SD so I prefer the heat of being more inland).

Which neighborhoods could strike the balance I'm looking for? I've heard nice things about Sawtelle...

Whats your monthly budget?

Sawtelle is cool and you'd be going against traffic in the morning. It's really only a street that goes few blocks, so it's definitely not the same as Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Fairfax District; those are neighborhoods.

What about West Hollywood? It's walkable, warmer than the westside and even with the traffic I doubt it'd be longer than a 30 min commute. I'd check out areas around 3rd St, Melrose, Santa Monica Blvd, etc... between La Cienega to the West and Fairfax to the east. Any further east your commute will probably be too long in the morning.

Well, we are planning on having a friend as a roommate so essentially we are looking for a 2 bedroom that would be max $3000 ($1000 per person) - ideally more like $2,550.

I would love West Hollywood but was under the assumption the commute would be horrible.

One of my friends lives in WeHo--right around Santa Monica and La Cienga. She gets into the office in about 30-35 minutes. More East than that would be worse.

Why not live in Westwood? It's walkable. Some busy areas with stores (e.g., Wilshire, Westwood Blvd., and the area around UCLA). Also some nice houses (some expensive, some very expensive), and nice condos (some expensive and new, some older and cheaper) and comparable apartments.

You might even be able to walk to work.

Try Brentwood, it's very close to Westwood (on the other side of the 405 freeway). It's a short commute by bus if you didn't want to drive. The area around San Vicente/Barrington has restaurants, coffee, grocery, etc.

It's a little expensive though.

Can confirm. I lived off 3rd and Fairfax and had to commute to Olympic and Bundy for work. It was about 35-40 min.
