Was out in Santa Clarita the other day and noticed a lot of vacant storefronts in downtown Newhall. Why is this? The area seems quite nice, charming, and full of character, something that is not particularly abundant in the Santa Clarita Valley, yet a lot of the businesses seem to have closed, there are a lot of "for rent" signs, and there is a definite feeling of decline. Is there a reason for this? To me it seems like the area would be ripe for being fixed up.

In the last few years there has been an attempt to gentrify the area, but sadly the economy has not supported it. Statistics have always said most new businesses fail in their first year. Due to our poor economy it seems to be tilted more towards handing out benefits to those who cannot find work than to fostering a climate where employers can make a profit and hire employees.

For what it's worth, Newhall is far better than most of the San Fernando Valley. I see the same vacancies there only worse.

The situation won't change until the tax regulations are changed to favor business startups and encourage job creation.

While I know the city of Santa Clarita is not as anti-business as the city of L.A. ., is it as anti-business as let's say Santa Monica or Beverly Hills?

It's America, it's the IRS, it's the federal government. Nothing to do with SC or LA, BH or SM. The whole country is anti-business. That's part of what the upcoming election is all about. Vote well and vote often! (J/K about the last part)

Not everywhere is as bad as L.A. is, or B.H., even in L.A. County. (Burbank and Glendale aren't.)
And most other counties in CA aren't as bad as L.A. County. (Ventura, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties arent)
And, of course, other states aren't as bad as CA.

Lots of states are doing better than CA, for example OH, TX and AZ. It's partly state policy fault too. IMO federal is the main drag. Some states make it worse or better.

I don't know of anything to explain Newhall except it is similar to what I see in SFV. I don't go to those other places, and SFV as little as possible, primary for shopping.

I cook Asian food and we got no good Asian markets in SCV, plenty in SFV where I used to live.

I take it the parts of the SFV you go to aren't Burbank or Glendale?

Take a drive through the SFV and see how many commercial properties you see for rent right now. Amazon, Ebay and e-commerce as a whole combined with Walmart and Target are quickly killing all brick and mortar small businesses

They're surviving in some areas a lot more than others.

Newhall reminds me a lot of Claremont, yet in Claremont there are few vacancies. Something's not being done right.

Don't worry, 5-10 years from now all of those businesses will be gone too.
