I've lived in LA my whole life and am now looking to purchase a home. Due to budget and commute constraints, the areas in which we are looking are fairly limited, but I want to make sure we don't end up in a terrible area.

When I was in patrol at Harbor Division, that area was decent. Stop by Fire Station 79 at 182nd & Vermont and ask the fire laddies there. They'll have a good feel for the area.

Let your own instincts guide you since you are a native. PD stats will certainly help. Just know that by buying property you now have a vested interest in the community. Get active wherever you end up. Illegal aliens have taken over most gangs and they are pushing for more territory. The PD's are not so open with this info due to political reasons. The most expensive areas of LA are the most crime free.

Thank you both for the input! It seemed relatively decent to me, but I just don't know much about the South Bay in general, having lived mostly in the central and Western areas of LA.

I don't know a lot about that area except I've driven through it a lot, been to the Walmart and the Home Depot there. I'd have a hard time comparing it to the rest of Gardena and Harbor Gateway, but by South Bay (as in beach cities) standards it's pretty ghetto.

You're going to have to MAKE time to look for yourself. People can give you advice, but you can only make the decision on your own. And if you don't make the time and look, you only have yourself to blame if you make a bad decision.

Im just down Vermont and to be honest that area is decent. I've never really had much concern for that area.

I also used to live near there, it was a pretty decent area. But I would drive down there and see for yourself. Also I'm not sure where you live now, but that location is pretty close to the 405/110, so the air quality will not be the best especially if you have young kids. I used to smell the fumes from the 110 when I left my house.
