I'm curious to how many of you left LA and then came back? How long did your hitatus last?

I left there last week and now having regrets. But it was something I absolutely have to do right now. I have to rebuild my work skills (web developer in training) and I found that difficult to do in the situation I was in with the high rent and overall costs of everything.

So I look at this as a retreat. A time to regroup. But I feel so depressed already. What did I just do? Did anyone else have similar feelings? It's hard to believe really that I'd miss all that cut throat driving, beeping horns, hours on the highway, etc...

Where did you move to ?

It seems pretty normal to feel that way after moving from a place . Were you born here or lived here a long time ?

Left LA (and the country) in 2004, for family reasons, came back in 2012. Didn’t hate where we were and glad I did it, but was always looking at prospect of returning and very, very happy to be back.

Why won't anyone say where they moved to before moving back to LA?

I was hesitant to say because it starts to get into reasonably specific identifying information, not always wise in an online setting, but I’ll tell you anyway. We moved to New Zealand. And while I’m happy to be back in LA, I now feel much more conflicted about being in the US generally than I did on November 7 2016. I love this country, but sometimes it is hard to recognize the optimistic, tolerant, warm and welcoming place it has seemed to be in the past. Glad to be in California.

That's kind of interesting as I felt more optimistic for the country on Nov 7 2016...yet it's hard to see California rapidly declining politically.
We should be warm and welcoming, to those that move here legally and make the country greater.

I'm here in Oregon, but there are similar problems up here. I'm originally from the Northeast. I was studying acting in LA, auditioning for commercials, performing... but it's just not doable without a dead solid and fully flexible reliable $50k income secondary career. I just couldn't do it anymore. So I'm leaving, finding a cheap place to live and work... rebuild my skills. I fully respect the creative that can manage to pull through and struggle but I couldn't do it anymore. Besides, there are other cities that are actually better than LA to develop.. especially for comedy. I'll be back. It'll take at least a few years, but when I do I'm settling in Santa Monica.

Sorry it didn't work out for you. Lots of broken dreams in Hollywood. Lot's of shady people too. At least you saw the light and got out in time. Maybe you can do theater in Oregon. Good luck
