What parts of the Entertainment Industry is actually done in LA, given it is the entertainment capital for the world if not just the USA?

Are a lot of shows and movies still filmed within the confines of LA? I know lots are actually filmed in other cities. A lot of TV stations like NBC, or CBS are based in NYC. A lot of music and media is also based in NYC. So what does LA have? Is it just the movie studios?

But what do the movie studios actually do in LA? Huge projects like LOTR is filmed in NZ. Nolan's Batman Trilogy is filmed in Chicago. So many stars live in LA. Are they mainly there for casting/auditions?

I read somewhere that there is like no Hollywood here, everything is a theme park or tour buses. these days. Though there was a tax break recently to bring in more movie making. Everything is done in another place. Like Game of Thrones is in Greece or Spain. Walking Dead is in Alexandria and Hilltop. Fear of the Walking Dead was done in LA then moved to Mexico. Even actors are working overseas like Matt Damon did a movie about the Chinese Wall in China. Transformers in Hong Kong. Mission Impossible in Russia and Dubai with Tom Crise. Tom Cruise was a Karate guy in Civil War Japan. The Bourne stuff was mostly in Europe. I was watching this movie Lion and they filmed in Australia and India. It used to be they filmed everything in LA and made it look like another country. Like Friends and Seinfeld were filmed in LA. Jaws was filmed at Universal Studios lot along with War of the Worlds. But now things are done in other countries like LOTR. Also outer space. like Gravity with Sandra Bullock.

You can cherry pick examples all day long of projects filmed outside of LA, but it doesn’t prove anything that hasn’t been true for years. Even when something is filmed elsewhere, most everything else from writing, producing, editing, design, music, etc..etc, is done in LA. I have friends that have no shortage of work, and make a good living, doing the little things you never think of when watching tv/movies.

While it’s true more and more is being filmed out of state, plenty is still filmed there. Nearly everytime I’m there I see streets blocked off for some sort of filming. If you really want to see how much is filmed there watch the credits at the end of your show, or if that is too much trouble just do a google search on IMDb.

It’s kinda cool when watching a show that takes place in “anytown USA” is actually the SFV, a lake back east somewhere is in IE, or a mountain location is actually the San Gabriel/San Bernardino mountains.

Filming is only part of the process to get a show or movie to the theater or your TV/mobile devices. The major studios in the LA area employ thousands of people to do all sorts of things unrelated to filming. You've got lawyers, accountants, marketing folks, sales, tech, and plenty of others who have a very limited impact (if any) on the creative side of things. These jobs are pretty much all based in LA.

And ... don't forget all the stuff that is filmed in and around Vancouver, BC. As far as location filming. Really, a lot! But also ... ditto to what BRinSM said! People tend to overlook that aspect.

In 2017, 61 feature projects filmed in Los Angeles, including 19 incentive-linked projects with a cast and crew count above 75 people, nearly twice the number of incentive-linked, similarly sized projects the region captured in 2016. Among those projects is Destroyer, A Wrinkle in Time, Bumblebee and Ad Astra.

Filming in Los Angeles Dips in 2017 But Still Ranks Second-Best Year:

Most of the decision making occurs here. Here in L.A. you have the studio executives, producers, agents, managers. Here is where shows and films get green-lighted. Here is where they make the development, financing, casting, and distribution deals.

Creatives who don't live in L.A. (top stars, writers, directors) still need to have their "people" in L.A., to make sure they have access to the decision makers, and hence are considered for the hottest films and TV shows.
