I’ll be staying at a hotel in Santa Monica in at about 4pm. I have the rest of the night and the entire next day to see la. I know la is huge but what major things would you see? We are not so much interested in museums and such, more scenic and sightseeing type stuff outside to see the natural beauty.

So far we want to see the Hollywood sign, Griffith Park/observatory, and Venice beach and Santa Monica pier.

What other stuff should I check out?

Rent a bike and ride the boardwalk from Venice Beach to Santa Monica. Only takes about 50 mins round trip.

The Hollywood Bowl is also a nice free place to visit near Griffith Park/Observatory.

Lake Hollywood Park is a nice place for a pic with the Hollywood sign right behind you.

You won't have time to check out "other stuff".

1. Drive on Mulhulland Drive at dusk.
2. Shop on Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills
3. How strong is your stomach? Have an Original Tommyburger at Beverly and Rampart
4. Getty Museum (you don't have to go see the paintings, just the view and the gardens).
5. Farmers Market (https://www.farmersmarketla.com/)

You will only have time to visit the western portion of Los Angeles...

For an up-close picture without the hike, yes. Otherwise it's visible in the distance from Griffith Park Observatory and also the Hollywood Bowl.
