The stink of tobacco , like the stink of cats, is permanent.

that is the craziest thing I have ever heard, but I do imagine finding a smoking complex might be a challenge.

If the cat liter box is kept completely clean this certainly is not the case. As for tobacco most I know who still smoke do so outside. I would suggest this little or big old lady do the same.

The smoke comes through the air/heating vents to other apartments. That's what I've read in the City-Data Real Estate Renting forum!

Sorry, Nita, have to disagree with you on this. My experience as a landlord has been such that I no longer rent to people with cats.

I understand what you are saying but my husband has a pet sitting business and cares for several families with as many as 3 cats. Most are indoor but not all. The families do care for the kitties and do keep the litter boxes very clean, as we do. Never have I walked into one of these houses and spelled even a hint of cats. Maybe cat hair when they are shedding, like our cat is right now, but no order. On the other hand I do remember when we rented an apartment in the Dallas area and they management had to replace all the carpeting because of the cat odor of the people who lived there prior to us.

As a landlord, I'd never allow smoking, not even pets. Such a nightmare with odours, damage and fleas. If I was to allow it, the security deposit and pet deposit would be high but I really wouldn't want to risk it again.

Those people ruin it for the responsible folks.
