personally I would never move to LA but you might check out Leisure world in Seal Beach. It's a large retirement community. Prices aren't to crazy there and they might have places with a yard.

Am I the only one not crazy about a stadium being put into my neighborhood?
I went to the forum a few weeks back for a concert. Aside from the asthetics of the area, the traffic alone would make me take a pass.

OP, move to an area YOU are going to feel comfortable being in. You owe it to YOURSELF to make sure that your retirement, the one you earned, is one you're happy and content with. Traveling goes both ways and a 2-hour plane ride is a short one these days. Good luck

Agree, and as grandchildren get older they many times have less interest in grandparents.

I know someone who relocated to another state(from a home they loved) to be near the grandchildren, well the grandkids were no longer 6 or 7, but 14 or 15 and grandparents weren't all that interesting to them anymore. They said it was a huge mistake on their part, which they couldn't undo.

OP, look at Oregon, you can be down here in no time. You also don't know just because you move close by how often you will actually see them.

Sometimes coming for a week or two every six months can mean seeing them more, than living 10 miles from them.

I would look into someplace like Sylmar, Newhall, Canyon Country or Palmdale.

It seems easier to get into LA from points north, than it does points east, like the IE...

I've been out in the IE (Corona, Elsinore, Temecula) and it can take up to 3 hours to get home to the South end of the San Fernando Valley sometimes.

When I'm out in Antelope Valley (Palmdale) visiting my brother, it only takes an hour, door-to-door.
