Yikes - what a butt ugly building. But then, I think the Broad is pretty horrible too.

I agree. What always come to my mind as someone in the design industry is the lack of forethought in the maintainability of the building, especially the cladding elements. Every slightly horizontal surface gathers dust and dirt, every vertical surface beneath will have a film of dirty water left behind after a rain. A cladding system comprised of thousands of complex shapes with nooks and crannies just becomes a nightmare just as a backwards sloping cliff design (even if it is a smoother surface) becomes inaccessible to maintain except by those trained to scale Half Dome.

It becomes just statement architecture with little of the balance of “Commodity, Form & Delight” that we are trained and bound by. I like Zaha Hadid as much as the next architect but these guys don’t quite have the same knack.

The Broad is not nearly as ugly, and in fact, sort of compliments its neighbors due to its textures, etc. By itself, I agree, the Broad looks sort of North Korean, but it has amazing elements, especially inside!
