The city of Santa Monica reported a drop of tourism of 1.4 percent. They say it's because of younger tourists not spending as much on skin care, etc, but I think it's because tourists are sending pictures back home of trash heaps, tents, knife-carrying crazy homeless, the soon-to-be bombed pier, and who knows what else that occured in last few years.

I think tourism will plummet soon.

Are there any stats on tourism in Venice? If SM is dropping I bet Venice is plummeting.

1.4% doesn’t seem like very much, almost a rounding error.

It’s been a few years since I was in Santa Monica, though.

Hard to believe as the Expo Line Train is jam packed with tourist most days of the week especially in the summer. I’ve noticed the streets are a lot more crowded in the years since the train opened. Maybe it’s less people staying in hotels.

That’s such a small percentage. I’ll bet the rain could have knocked it down a bit.

Doesn't sound like it.

"Spending has still grown 18.4 percent in the last five years, however, and it generated significantly more tax revenue for the City of Santa Monica last year."

Yes, but overseas vacations are normally planned months or a year in advance; this would be before the pier bomb.

1) I think you have no clue what you're talking about.
2) There are a myriad other places in Los Angeles for tourists to visit other than Santa Monica. Venice, Malibu, Hollywood, DTLA, Culver City, South Bay, Long Beach, OC, Pasadena, Silverlake, Echo Park, blah blah blah.

No. I don't think most people pay attention to those incidences. I don't think most people really think that stuff is going to happen to them. Those that are affected by these stories are probably scared of their own shadow. Until I see more evidence of a trend, its probably just some cycle.
