You can't go wrong with living in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, or Manhattan Beach (next to each other). The majority of the night life is in Hermosa Beach though, though Redondo and Manhattan have their share.

South Redondo > North Redondo
Hermosa > South Redondo
Manhattan > Hermosa

My opinion as a 35 year old, but each of the others have their charms and perks as well.

The best way to find a place is to drive around and ask friends to ask their management company if they have units opening up soon. The quality of leads and scams originating from internet leads are not worth it most of the time. Westside Rentals.com filtered people out by charging, now that they are free through apartment.com the leads have lost some credibility in my opinion.

Since Redondo Beach is located in coastal LA County, the residential housing stock within the city is very old by Sun Belt standards. Therefore, the features and finishes in most homes are almost always outdated. Additionally, most homes lack basic amenities such as central air-conditioners, dishwashers, laundry machines, etc., especially in the $1,800-$2,500 monthly rental price range. Please note this includes apartment, condominium and single-family homes.

Also, I personally find the “curb appeal” of Redondo Beach among neighboring cities in the South Bay, especially Hermosa Beach and Torrance, to be much lower than equivalently priced areas in Orange County. Obviously, LA County at large is older, poorer and less focused on beautification projects than neighboring Orange County, but for the God-damn price you pay to live in Hermosa Beach and Redondo Beach, you would at least expect to have clean, smooth sidewalks and watered road verges.
