I'm going to be working at USC and am attempting to determine some neighborhoods to look at. I know that the area surrounding USC has a lot of crime, so I'm planning to avoid that.

I'm looking for a safe and quiet young professional neighborhood. I'd also like to get the most for $1300 a month a large 1br or a 2br (maybe a small cottage) and I'd like to keep the commute under an hour if possible. Suggestions?

With your budget, a apacious 1br will be difficult to find. A cottage (or bungalow as they're called here) will probably be impossible to find at that price unless you can find someone with a guest house they're willing to rent out.
The first area that comes to my mind is Palms which is southeast of the the 10/405 interchange. You'll probably be able to find something in that area. I have a friend in there and safety has never been a concern when I go to visit him. Culver City (just south of Palms) might also be worth looking into. Koreatown will probably also have rents in your price range, but parking is brutal and safety will be more of an issue there.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I looked over the older USC threads and that helped a bit.

Would the commute from Pasadena or Long Beach be insane? I've seen some bungalows there and it seems like the rents are a bit more reasonable.

long beach would be insane. pasadena, less so, but only because it isn't as far away so it would be a shorter period of insanity. traffic would still be a *****, though.

Pasadena would be an easier commute than Long Beach. Also, Pasadena is a LOT nicer than LB. No sketchiness in Pas or the hit and miss sketchiness of LB? There are threads on these subjects, too.
