I'm staying in Rancho for a couple weeks, and after talking with a buddy of mine, he recommended I check out Laguna Beach. I love Morro Bay, so I got the impression that it's the same kind of community -- smaller town, nice people, decent places to get some food, etc.
I'm going to be heading down there on a weekday, but I want to get some non-breakable souvenirs for my wife that are kind of unique to Laguna Beach.
Laguna Beach is in Orange County, so you will probably want to post over there. (By the way, which "Rancho" are you talking about?)
Laguna Beach is small, quaint, beautiful, and very crowded. It is known for art, so the most unique souvenirs would be something made by a local artist. If the Sawdust Festival is still open when you're here--it closes at the end of August--you could find something nice there like handmade jewelry or a small print or photograph. Nice pottery and art glass, too, but that's breakable.

I would have written the exact same thing. Arrive early to find parking, walk around the art neighborhoods.
One cool thing to do is drive up to Top of The World, it's about 10 minutes up from the beach, and hike down to Car Wreck. It's really bizarre and a nice one hour or so round trip, moderate level.
Wow, are you lucky. Check out Pageant of the Masters. It should be going on now. It is one of the coolest things ever. You wil have to buy resale tickets probably because they usually sell out. I would check stubhub. Do it. It's worth it.

I went to Pageant of the Masters for the first time this year, despite having been to the Laguna Art Festival (on the same grounds) almost every year since my parents first pushed me through the exhibits in a stroller. Actually, I won two tickets and that's why I finally made it. It was an awesome show and basically indescribable ("People dressing up to imitate paintings and sculpture" does not capture it). I will definitely go again next year and regret all the years that I missed.

I am glad you enjoyed it, and it is a looked-forward-to event all year long. I have been twice, and do not share everyone's enthusiasm for it. I am glad it brings people (and their tourist dollars) to the city. The best time of the year is approaching - October!!!! That's when it is still warm and beautiful and summer-like, but the tourists (and the subsequent crowds, traffic, parking issues, etc) are gone and the kiddies are all back in school :-). Then I can finally get out of my driveway and cross the traffic to head north without waiting forever to get a break in traffic :-)
Re: Pageant of the Masters: you need to sit close to the front; otherwise, you're is barely able to make out the living pictures.
Our seats were in the back, but we brought binoculars, and that made all the difference. Not complaining, they were free tickets.
