When I taught English for Adults at the adult school near Pierce, a lot of the Russian students lived in Tarzana so there's that for some reason. Persian students typically were Woodland Hills and Latino students came from the north in Reseda/Canoga. I like Tarzana. There is a little pocket park near Reseda/Ventura where I could park and walk the neighborhood. It is quiet and not a lot of through streets/back roads to the 405.

If you go through Encino in the morning, commuters have found every single back road to get from the 101 to the 405 or Sepulveda. That commute into West LA is insane and drivers will use every little neighborhood street they can. It was always gridlock through those neighborhoods and then the streets that didn't connect to anything were completely dead. Tarzana has some of that too, but not nearly what Encino/Sherman Oaks get.

It's not even that the back roads are faster, but some days you just can't do that death match merge form the 101 to the 405.

The West Valley gets pretty hot. Honestly, the LA climate people talk about on TV only really exists along the coast nowadays.

Tarzana and Woodland hills have some nice streets to walk, especially south of the boulevard. I used to walk up a little street that parallels Topanga Canyon, all the way up to Mulholland (not as steep as you might think). It was a nice six mile round trip from my place near Topanga Mall.

Anyways! I loved the west valley, but 18 months there was enough for me.

Tarzana isn't as upscale of a city as it used to be. Just 2 days ago there was an Airbnb shooting in Tarzana.

The West SFV has always been notoriously hot.

In a thoroughly random thread hijack, I once had the opportunity to appraise Edgar Rice Burrough's home at 2029 Pinehurst Road in the Hollywood Hills off Franklin and actually got to sit at the built-in desk where Burroughs wrote Tarzan. Random, but kinda cool.

I am jealous. I read all his books as a kid.

Very cool! Totally unrelated as well...I went to the same high school as Rush drummer Neil Peart in Ontario Canada. Our History teacher pointed to a desk at the back of his classroom and said,

"Neil sat in that desk and he used to drum his fingers on the sides all through class."

Some of the kids acted too cool to sit in the desk. But not me, I sat down and look at the doodles he drew on the top, still preserved.

But what is Tarzana all about? Driving on Ventura Blvd from Tarzana into Encino, you see an abrupt change. The shops go from random, ethnic, old looking shops to suddenly new, clean, big chain stores, higher end.

But I know there are lots of families in Tarzana and schools are good. They have a public LAUSD high school! I just can't put my finger on the description of Tarzana. It feels like it was a semi-rural community that is just slowly beginning to get a makeover. There are many new "modern farmhouse" new construction homes going up.

Please tell me money aside, would you rather live in Encino or Tarzana. What is your best description of what Tarzana is all about. Thanks!

There's nothing really "rural" about Tarzana, or even the SFV as a whole. Most of the SFV is urbanized Los Angeles now. You don't even really get a "suburban" feel until your out near Chatsworth or Lakeview Terrace or out past Calabassas.

Tarzana and Encino are, for all intents and purposes, the same community.
