If you can find a place in Culver then that is your best bet. A very good friend of mine sends his kids to the local public school and seems happy with the decision. He could afford private too, but chooses public. Other than that, you're right, it is an older suburb, but it's certainly much better maintained than the nearby areas of LA city. Having said that, it's far away enough from Venice that there's not really any influence. The infamous 405 separates the two, plus a handful of miles of Venice Blvd. There's plenty of traffic around there, but you'll find that anywhere in LA, it's certainly not unique to Culver City.

I recommend the South Bay - Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach and Palos Verdes, whether it's Rancho Palos Verdes, Palos Verdes Estates or Rolling Hills Estates (all different cities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula, although Palos Verdes Estates has basically no apartments, just single family homes).

All these communities have great schools, a very high quality of life and they're all commutable to Culver City.
