As far as parking in LA (going to restaurants, etc), is most of it done in parking lots or on the streets? How long does it take you usually to find parking? Have you ever had to spend 20+ minutes finding parking?

No. Use valets if there's no spot. And learn to parallel park.

Do most valets these days know how to drive manual? I drove one to Neptune's Net a while ago and saw a 20 year old valet parking cars -- I parked on a side street.

Using Staples Center as an example, you can find free street parking on a game or concert night but you will have to walk 15-25 minutes from the other side of the the 110 or from Santee Alley area, which I usually don't mind doing if its me and a group of buddies...if it's me and my wife I am paying for closer parking to not hear her complain.

As you get closer to the venue you see parking start at $10 and climb up all the way to $50 as you are near the arena. I'd rather save myself the $10 for some popcorn and a softdrink.

If you go to a popular location like Downtown, Santa Monica, Hollywood, you won't find free parking unless you want to walk 30 minutes. It's especially difficult during street sweeping days.

it makes sense to use public transportation. You can do it halfway by parking near a subway station.

I never have that big of a problem finding metered parking no matter where or what is going on. Sometimes you'll need to circle the block or just sit there for a few minutes and someone will leave.
Having said that most meters have 2 hour limits.
I would never let a valet park my car ...

Usually there is some sort of valet or something. If it’s not a really fancy restaurant, it’ll probably be $5 or less. Several years ago I tried to go to a restaurant in Fairfax area that didn’t have a valet. All the parking that wasn’t taken in the several blocks around was resident permit only. I drove around for 20 mins trying to find an open metered space in vain. I gave up and went somewhere else. My spouse jokes that in the Midwest, it was a point of pride to never pay for parking. In LA, we’re always happy to see a valet stand- we don’t have to waste time looking for a spot.

Obviously, the difficulty in finding parking varies from neighborhood to neighborhood. It general, it isn’t an issue in the Valley except for a few areas. In the basin, neighborhoods with older structures built prior to parking minimums are more difficult, as you are competing against the residents whose buildings don’t have parking.
