None of that applies to me. I think I'll stay until the Olympics

Manhattan Beach has a flat-out ban on short-time rentals (as does Hermosa and Redondo). No one wants their neighborhood to be Party Central for revolving (revolting, too...) groups of dudebros who pool their money to rent a large house by the beach for the par-tay of the year.

The idea behind AirBNB sounds extremely appealing - I have some spare space, you need somewhere to crash, let's connect the dots. But in reality, it's turning into moneyed interests buying entire properties and essentially operating as unlicensed hotels. There's a reason we had to institute fire codes, noise ordinances, minimum parking spaces etc. etc. for that sort of business.

The south bay communities already ban short-time rentals, and that's massively popular among the locals.
This is happening all over the country in cities where tourism is a major industry. I'm originally from Nashville, TN and there are so many "party" house owned by out of down developers - and the neighbors are just in a living hell.

And there are here, it's causing rents to go up for real residents and a shortage of available rentals.

Personally, I don't see the appeal. I like my privacy and have zero interest in staying in someone's spare room or apartment. These are total strangers to me (and I to them). I much prefer a nice hotel with room service. But I travel solo and rent a car everywhere but SF (I'm also an pretty independent traveler and don't get the Uber appeal either).

I agree that it shouldn't only be about LA. However, why should non-Airbnb homeowners anywhere have to tolerate all the strangers that Airbnb's bring into their residential neighborhoods?

Hotels were designed to handle out-of-owners. They are well-regulated, zoned to specific areas, and have procedures in place to better deal with strangers than do homeowners who reside in their own houses and have a reasonable expectation of privacy and safety.

This past Saturday, a 24-year-old man was fatally shot outside a Tarzana Airbnb when confronted by three robbery suspects. The deceased man was "part of a group that rented a room at the Sugarman Street address on Airbnb to celebrate a birthday, according to media reports". "He and a friend had just arrived at the location in a vehicle when they were approached by three men."

And here in the SF Bay Area, on Halloween, five people were killed and others were wounded when gunfire erupted in an Airbnb home in Orinda, a small, upscale suburb of San Francisco. The four-bedroom home had been rented on Airbnb by a woman who told the owner her dozen family members had asthma and needed to escape smoke from a wildfire. Even though the owners, Michael Wang and Wenlin Lou, were suspicious of the one-night rental on Halloween (duh), greed won out and they agreed to the rental, yet don't accept any responsibility for what happened. Those same owners have a history of problematic "party" rentals. Although the maximum occupancy should not have exceeded thirteen people, there were 100 partygoers.

This will keep happening at Airbnb properties. There needs to be more and better regulations for Airbnb hosts/properties, not fewer and less effective. Neighborhoods cannot be disrupted like this.

I stand with the residents of the communities that are negatively affected by Airbnb's, especially those properties that are owned by non-residents who own several properties. It's no longer about "a little extra income" for Mom & Pop and a little social interaction with guests. These are not the Bed and Breakfasts of years gone by.

But Airbnb has banned parties as of a couple of weeks ago. BTW anyone who can't make the hearing can send an email to voice their opposition to cpc at lacity dot org . That's cpc@lacity.org

Oh I get the original post now.
This article from LA curbed today about the issue of vacation rentals. https://la.curbed.com/2019/12/19/210...5vIF58v52S58T0

Hope the link works, others google Curbed LA website or facebook page and look for the link of AirBnbs.

LA City has rules about short term rentals for primary residence that started July 1st. And you can only rent out only your primary residence 120 days out of the year whether your whole home or just a room. The people who advocated for AirBnb lax rules mainly stressed for need to supplement income to keep them from being homeless.

The issue of secondary, 3,4,5th.... other residences wasn't included in the initial rules. The discussion on that was today.
I guess people are going to struggle to pay off their 2nd, 3rd, 4th ... 20th homes/apartments if AirBnb and such laws are prevented? Seriously?
