Hi all,

For those who are familiar with both NorCal and SoCal:

I really enjoy Pleasanton (every aspect of it - except the price!), but work is taking me to LA. Any towns around LA that are similar in size, feel and safety?

South Pasadena and La Crescenta-Montrose would come to mind. Good schools, relatively safe, upper-middle class, educated demographics.

I’ve lived in Pleasanton and both South Pasadena and La Crescenta-Montrose. South Pasadena has a small town feel, similar to Pleasanton. But, the prices are not inexpensive for either area, by any means.

A few more: Sierra Madre, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, La Canada and Westlake Village.
All of these areas are desirable neighborhoods and will have the prices to reflect that.

I agree with the above. I'd also add Agoura Hills and Oak Park, which are next to Westlake Village.

A lot of these areas you're naming aren't in the LA Basin though. I don't think there are cities like Pleasanton or Livermore in the LA Basin. The closest comparison to those cities would be out in Ventura County (Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Simi Valley).

Thousand Oaks and surrounding towns feels very similar to Pleasanton and Livermore. The Santa Clarita area is also fairy similar, but it’s not quite as upscale. I’m not sure where you’ll be working, but south Orange County would likely also meet your needs. FWIW, all of these locales are a brutal commute to LA, not all that different than Pleasanton to SF or SJ.

As others have said, Pleasanton-Livermore is very similar to Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village/Agoura Hills/Calabassas area.

Main differences:

------------------Pleasanton-----------------Thousand Oaks
Healthcare: .....Stanford Health...............UCLA Health
Employment:....Oracle, Tech...................Amgen, TV/Film production
Ethnicity:..........White & Asian, Indian.....White & Middle Eastern, some Asian
Coastal:...........San Francisco Bay...........Malibu
Commute:........Oakland/SF/San Jose......San Fernando Valley

I say none. Maybe Moorpark and it’s even more pricey than Pleasanton.
