I'm disappointed, Tulemutt. Why no pithy quip about the weather in Moscow, or commiseration over yet another reduction in rations at the camp in Magadan? But at least you had the good sense to mention War and Peace. Maybe next you'll quote from the wholesome wisdom of my fellow peasant, Platon Karatayev?

Careful now! You're about to be accused of being a petulant teenager, or the impending murderer of grandma, or a Russian troll... or for the particularly vehement, all three.

No Tulemutt, of course not! How could you accuse us of being so obtuse? Santa Claus is of course a weaponization of the Russian "Grandfather Frost", and the Easter Bunny is a communist plot to render Christianity ridiculous, but suggesting that a mammal could lay eggs.

Applying the 1st and 14th Amendments is a "ploy"? Asst. AG Eric Dreiband has had a consistant, non-partisan record of serving the public.

It is so freaking hilarious to see the Left discover state's rights and the 10th Amendment after 80 years of trashing them. If the 10th Amendment truly has any meaning, then most of the New Deal has to be undone, much of the civil rights laws of the 1960's and almost anything touched by the Warren Court.

And yet, if I understand correctly the complaints of the Left, Trump should have shut down the entire country in January, ordered a billion masks and 500,000 ventilators for the country. Now it sounds like maybe mayors and governors should have ordered masks and ventilators for their cities and states?

Which is it? The federal government is responsible for everything (think Katrina) or they are not? Or does the Left only choose local control when it suits their agenda?

So we should be ruled by "scientists" who tell us what to do for our own good? Does that apply to red meat, cigarettes, bread and internal combustion vehicles?

Science says if we passed a national speed limit of 25MPH we'd save tens of thousands of lives every year, many of whom are innocent victims.

When Tulemutt can't answer a question, which is often, he ignores it and makes absurd statements; ones absurd even compared to the rest of his regular nonsense.

He wants us ruled by scientists, but doesn't explain what happens when scientists are wrong or disagree.

If a national strategy had truly been imposed from the beginning, the U.S. probably wouldn't be seeing 1.6+ million cases now and almost 100,000 deaths. The federal government can't tell the states, "Fend for yourselves; figure out PPE and ventilators on your own" and then suddenly flip-flop. Besides, I can pretty much guarantee that if Trump wants our city to open up, it's probably the worst possible course of action.

You ignored my reply to you.

Besides that, why, pray tell, do we have governors (and mayors) and state and county health departments that have budgets in the billions of dollars then?

You wanted a "national strategy imposed"at sometime in the past (Jan? Feb? Mar?), but not a national strategy imposed now? Which is it? You wanted Trump to close the NYC transportation system? Close nursing homes? How granular can a national strategy be?

a smackdown may be in order for these useless California politicians and Trump is just the guy to do it. Garcetti ought to be dealing with his out of control homeless population and leave the law to Mr. Barr.

False equivalency to compare a global heath pandemic to racial injustice. Call us back when the social distancing measures are only applied to Blacks or Whites or Asian-Americans, etc.

By its absence in the U.S. Constitution, public health has primarily been the responsibility of states for hundreds of years, meaning governors (and mayors) have the last word on most coronavirus issues. Anything not given to the federal government, as the 10th amendment says, belongs to the states, unless it is specifically prohibited.

It was obviously a political ploy....Dreiband has made a law career of working for large corporations fighting against discrimination suits. And we are all of sudden to believe he is concerned with the rights of the "little" people in Los Angeles? Come on....

Smackdowns unfortunately aren't prominently featured in the Constitution. But I do sincerely hope that the voters exercise their principal remedy: vote these petty Napoleons out of office, at the earliest opportunity.

And that is a fundamental problem. As written, the consequence is that whereas the powers of the federal government to traduce individual rights are limited, the powers of the states' governments, to do the same thing, are less limited. So if Garcetti thinks that we haven't done enough shutting-down, invoking emergency powers, what is our recourse? Apparently all that we can do, is to vote him out... in two and a half years? That's a long time to be shut down.

I don't care if this Dreiband character built his career by defending Big Tobacco, mafiosi, klansmen, or aging concentration-camp guards. Emergencies make for strange bedfellows, and in the present emergency, any ally is a good ally.
