My licence expires in Sept. I just got a letter saying I have to go into a DMV to renew it. My last two renewals were by mail.

Why are they now saying I have to go in? I'm only 55. I know if you're over 70 you have to renew in person, to get a vision test. And yes, the letter says I have to have a vision test.

The DMV office I usually go to is now open, but it was closed due to corona for a few weeks.

You can get a paper extension but only if the expiration date is between March and the end of July. Mine is in Sept. If I wait a while, will I eventually be able to get the paper extension? I guess that's what I should do.

Go to their website, create a password, etc. They may let you do the whole thing online, since so many DMV offices are still closed. https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv

It says in the paper letter I have to go in.

25 DMV offices are now open.

Is the paper extension thing something they added recently because of corona?

BTW this is the link about paper extensions.

Have you ever gotten a DMV letter saying you have to go in, but you didn't have to?

I made a new account (which is required since Feb) and clicked on Driver License Renewal and it just displayed an info page about Real IDs.

I got two five-year extensions in a row (in 2010 and 2015), and that's why I have to go in. It says that on the paper letter. Maybe they think the photo of you on the license wouldn't be accurate?

Yes, mine expires in July, and I was supposed to go in. I thought I would get a RealID with it--before the shutdown--so I sent in all those requirements online and got to the "You now need to go to the DMV" page. Of course, no DMVs were open then; later, a few were open, but no appointments were available. I checked again last week, and suddenly, I'm no longer required to go in; I just paid the renewal fee online.

It looks as if they're trying to cut down on the deluge of people formerly required to go in, so they're giving us a break because of the pandemic.

2A. You may be eligible to renew your license by Internet if you can answer No to all of the following questions:

Does your driver license expire more than 120 days from today's date?
Will you be 70 years of age or older when your current driver license expires?
Are you currently on any type of driving probation or suspension?
Did you violate a written promise to appear in court within the last two years?
Have you already received two consecutive five year extensions by mail?
Do you have a driver license from more than one state or jurisdiction?

I went to the appointments section and it says new appointments are not currently available.

I imagine there would be a huge line if only 25 DMV offices are open and most people didn't have an appointment.

You have to go in every few renewals, for a new photo. But I think they should waive that this year, in light of CV.

My answer to this question is Yes:
Have you already received two consecutive five year extensions by mail?

The paper letter says "Your last two renewals have been by mail. This notice requires you to now renew at a DMV office."

Why do you say they are waiving it?
