Chess is a great game to play! If you're looking for a hobby that will help you focus in this day and age where everyone's glued to their cell phones with short attention spans, chess will definitely help with that. It's almost like meditation in a sense when you play. Highly recommended!

1. Santa Monica Chess Park - this is the California's equivalent to Washington Square Park in New York. You'll find hustlers here who will play you for $2 a game as well as other people who just want to play casual. The scene was pretty big about 8-10 years ago, but sadly it's slowly been occupied by homeless people, but don't let that stop you as there's only a handful of them. Also, you might run into some FIDE masters who are on vacation from Europe.

2. Glendale Chess Park - Glendale is home to many Armenians and Armenians love to play chess! This park is located between buildings a couple blocks from the Glendale Galleria. Here's some more information on it Chess Park:

3. Coffee Bean on Ashland/Main in Santa Monica - word on the street is it's really popping here on Thursday nights!

4. And of course, you can't forget The Los Angeles Chess Club! Here you can play casual games or play in the weekly tournament games that run every Saturday and Sunday. Great for kids too as they love chess and their parents can stay and work if they want to at the club as it has wifi and outlets.

Used to play in a Mall that set out table for all players. A lot of fun. Gone now.

When the lockdown hit, a buddy of mine and I started playing chess online at Chess.com. Now we play a game or two most days.

With lockdown i am not sure any clubs are currently playing, however there are many chess gathering all over CA and plenty of official tournaments happening both in Los Angeles and Vegas.
