I'm happy to sign any petition that bans such loud cars.

Not quite! Hint: there's an "H" in the middle - and it's seven letters.

A lot of luxury sport models have very loud factory exhausts these days that sound aftermarket. Maserati in particular comes to mind.

I am relatively new to San Diego and noticed the same thing here. There have been enough complaints in downtown SD that it's been at the top of some of the recent Captain Advisory Meeting agenda. California law says that vehicles must not be equipped with a muffler or any exhaust modifications that increase exhaust noise above 95 dbA. I'm surprised it's tolerated so much here, but every place I've lived had its surprises .

This is the 12th state I've lived in, and I too have noticed that people really like their loud cars and bikes down here, to an extent I've not seen in any other place. I don't mind one once in a blue moon, but it's ubiquitous here. I personally can't stand all the noise pollution. None of us want to hear your car. I really wish the cities would actually enforce ordinances against these noise polluters. God help you if you live near a busy blvd.

I always figured that there are just many more poorly endowed dudes in SoCal than in other places I've lived.

There's something myopic amongst people who have decided this is what's most valuable to them -- making car go boom boom. They are having their fun but without any regard for how other people feel. Well, it's disrespectful to pedestrians. It's affecting my family's health. I bet it's affecting your health, that's why you found this thread. We all know this issue has gotten worse and it needs to stop. Call your State reps (https://findyourrep.legislature.ca.gov/) Let's get fines to be astronomically high, especially for shops that enable this practice.
