Does anyone happen to know which county hospital is better to work at or who has a better reputation? I'm a new grad RN and debating. LA-USC or Harbor UCLA?

I'm not an RN but I used to work for CHLA, which is affiliated with LA-USC. From what I heard, this is a county hospital with limited resources and an abundance of needs (i.e., prepare to be overworked, underpaid). Also, I had a supervisor who worked for Harbor UCLA and loved it.

But take my advice with a grain of salt since I'm not a nurse, and UCLA is my almamater--so of course I'm biased!
Anyway, since the 2 hospitals are far from each other you should factor in the distance from home --> work, given the crazy gas prices. Hope this helps!

Harbor UCLA has a better reputation. County USC services an extremely economically challenged population. The area is depressing and high crime (near East LA)

LA County-USC definitely has a ethnically diverse, economically challenged population of patients. Pathology is good that is definitely a plus for your clinical learning experience (whether you are a student or a graduate). Some departments fare better than others in terms of staff support...
Can't really compare the two (LAC vs Harbor) though...

Tough to compare. Having volunteered at both hospitals I would prefer County USC. Even though its located in a challenged area, the doctors and staff there are some of the top in the country. Childrens Hospital is one of the best in the country. The USC Norris cancer research center is amazing and some of the professors there are great as well. Not sure if Doctor Peter Wolf is still there in the pharmaceutical lab.

I say go for USC. But, its your call. As an RN Im sure its more important to you to work where there is a greater need than to work someone where you feel its a badge of honor to say "I work at ............ hospital".

I vote for Harbor - their Emergency staff is top-notch.

both are county hospitals, and both serve diverse populations. County USC sees more of the trauma patients of central los angeles and Harbor sees more of the south bay people.

for experience in trauma USC is the best place, it used to be King Drew, but sadly its now closed. lots of people end up at County USC, most trauma from the county end up there. specialist at the top of their fields work there.

im also biased as county usc saved my friends life and has seen the birth place for many of my folks.

good luck, my vote is for COUNTY USC.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center cited for numerous safety violations and may face a possible shut-down. [mod]link removed[/mod]
