How popular was the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California in the 1970's-2000's compared to today? What were visitor numbers for example like compared to now?

I think it was more popular when people also went to see the Spruce Goose.

There was the package deal with a USS Iowa visit in the later but pre COVID years, but down the coast San Diego has more in the maritime museum category.

Now.

A year ago, there was strong smell of weed.

Several years ago, you could also visit the submarine near it.

We spend the night on it, may years ago, when we had to drive to Long Beach to pick up some specialized business materials. I loved it, but was horrified to see that so many things were missing, knobs off the drawers etc. I think some nasty people stole the knobs & anything else they could pry off in the once beautiful rooms.

Not sure about today, but in the late 70's my wife and I went there several times and enjoyed Ports of Call as well. The last time we drove by, it did not look like much was going on.

As I recall, it was quite popular as a place to visit in the 1970s, and a lot of people used it as a wedding venue. Then things went downhill in the 1980s and early 1990s, and it completely closed for awhile in December 1992. I don't know if annual visitor numbers are available, but it would be interesting to see. I'm not sure if it has ever been financially viable. Even Disney couldn't figure out a way to do anything with it that made financial sense.

Ship burned 1 gallon of diesel to travel 18 inches...

Imagine how much fuel it took to 'cross the pond...

From what I heard, the Queen Mary was really popular in the late 1990's and early 2000's after James Cameron's Titanic came out. Also, the ship sees about 1.5 million paying visitors a year normally, about the same number that visit the Seattle Space Needle and the observation deck of the Sears Tower in Chicago.

I remember visiting there as a kid with my family in the 1970s. It was a big deal back then.
