The Americana is more boutique places -- places you shop once in a while (unless you're quite wealthy), with theaters, restaurants, Barnes and Noble -- more lounging type places. The addition of the Borders/Circuit City/Linens N Things development across the street didn't seem to hurt the Galleria... to me, the Americana will just bring more people into the area -- good for all area businesses. At least, that's my theory.
I dont know how it's going to play out, it could work like that.

-I think the trend is towards outdoor, "lifestyle center" malls..Grove, Promenade, City Walk. Indoor malls aren't "cool" anymore. Santa Monica Place, Fallbrook, etc. They look outdated.

Or hotels in Vegas. Tropicana, Stardust, all the old ones can't keep up. People want the latest and greatest. They'll trade up to Bellagio or Venetician if they're given the chance.

-Lot of lookie loo's, curiousity for Americana. It'll probably be the big destination this summer. And for tourists, they'll probably first go to Americana. Even to window shop.

-The big anchor department stores of malls havent been doing well (merging or going out of busines). Maybe not Nordstroms or Macys yet.

-Foot traffic, people wont linger as long at the Galleria.

I can see why the galleria spent a fortune to stop the project. But maybe they'll both work.

I'm about 45 min away from Americana & I plan to go there once before the summer's over. By then maybe the crowds will have worn off. Then of course I'll go to the Galleria while I'm there. I think most people will make a day of it by going to both places (Americana & the Galleria). Now whether Americana will do good business, I don't know. Do the residents of Glendale have that kind of money to spend at a shopping area like that?

The Americana will most likely become another Shopping/Dining Attraction in L.A.,just like The Grove,CityWalk,Third Street Promenade,Etc,so yeah I think it will be successful.

And even if the residents of Glendale don't have the money to shop there,i'm sure their will be lots of other people from other parts of L.A that will.
