Those are all good day trips. I don't know how to say which is "best" without knowing exactly what you are looking for.

That really depends on the goal.

For us - weekend get away = palm springs / la quinta (this was my vote)

Weekend motorcycle trip or drive = SB or Malibu mtns/beaches.

Looking for a more romantic outdoorsy vibe.

Santa Barbara or Laguna Beach for both romantic and outdoorsy. Joshua Tree is definitely the most outdoorsy but I wouldn't necessarily call it romantic.

Budget is no concern. Maybe not that outdoorsy but more like walking on trails, stroll along a beach, walkable to interesting shops and sights. Maybe rent a scooter or bike.

I voted for Catalina because:

1. Looks beautiful

2. They need your tourism dollars because that's their only industry

You could probably do both Joshua Tree & Palm Springs on the same weekend. Stop in Joshua Tree for Saturday walking & then head to Palm Springs for hotel & dinner.

Los Leones.

You can hike for hours above Getty Villa.
The street itself, Los Leones Dr, has restrooms and tables.

Then, you can walk down Sunset Blvd to the beach.
