Actually, I'm originally from NY, and in the NYC area, "the city" is the term used for just Manhattan. I think it's dumb, but whatever

Hard to believe it's coming as a surprise OP. Just looking at Zillow or something will tell you all you need to know. You can get closer than you are, or find another spot that has job opportunities, or get a 1-2 bedroom for the two of you and hope you find jobs that pay you enough money to live the way you want down the road.

What is going to happen is what to happens almost everyone else in the middle class-ish group. They live there for a while in a fairly dumpy apt or condo, eventually get tired of the commute, congestion, homeless, bad schools (since you have kids) and then move away from the city. To the valley, which is hot, orange county if they can afford it, or pack up and leave altogether. Most of us go through this as young professionals, so adding kids to that mix makes it even less motivating.
