Huntington, why not ask for VONS to open in South Gate or Huntington Park? Or are there budget grocery stores in those cities?

Default quality of life...you decide

LA is probably a great city in it's own way, but it shows you something about the US. . If you don't have money, you really don't have anything.

It is all relative quite true. But it isn't just money that makes the wheels go 'round..often it's the "squeaky wheel that gets the grease"...
Los Angeles as a city that needs services to remain safe (like any other city) is soooo big and soooo understaffed in Police that by the time the chronic trouble spots get their coverage, the rest of us are at the mercy of the thugs.
Alot of the nice areas start suffering from the "broken window" syndrome. You know, where quality of life issues are not dealt with right away; like a little grafitti here, a drug house there, and pretty soon all the riff raff come to (your) neighborhood cause they think no one cares.

It is also accountability. People in Bev. Hills have no problem reminding their public servants who signs their paycheck. We in the smaller towns of LA have to do the same thing with our council members and other gov't officials... It is the people that decide what is going to be acceptable in their neighborhood .
The danger of any place in the world is not because of the evil people who mean to do others harm, but because of the failure of good people to do anything about it

Default Gang Treuce in Harbor gateway

Well, it is very saddening to see that just two days after the supposed "gang treuce" A blackman has been shot at in racial shootings

LA needs a 'Giuliani-type' mayor who doesn't put up with any of this crap. Instead we got Mr. Pro- Mexico-type. He has no idea how to handle gangs= gang violence going up! He has nice ideas like adding trees, but are trees more important than adding cops?

The LAPD is hiring; go sign up! Hurry, they're waiting for you! They're even offering bonuses.

Voters in L.A. seem to be really reluctant to provide money for more cops. The LAPD is only one third the size of the NYPD even after the increases in police. If the LAPD was as big as the NYPD, then Tony would be able to achieve the same decreases in crime that Rudy achieved. Tony doesn't have the funds or tools at his disposal that Rudy did.

BTW, having lived in NYC when Rudy was mayor I can say that he was not universally popular prior to 9/11 because of his crackdowns on night life. Admittedly, his heroism on "Terrible Tuesday" makes up for any of his flaws.

I honestly think it's too late for anyone to control the problem.

If L.A. had 30,000 cops like NYC did, instead of 7000, things would change pretty rapidly.

Note that people said the same thing about NY - that it was too late to control the problem - in the late 80s/early 90s and things changed drastically.

All it takes is money and political will.
