I just moved here from Arizona 2-3 months ago, and I've been trying to research the fun areas to live. Right now I'm in Redondo Beach (between Catalina & Esplanade). This place is really, really boring.

I had been planning to move to Pine Ave, but everyone played boogie man with the crime.

Anyways, my work is in the Torrace area and I'd like to stay roughly within a 30-minute commute. I've tried looking at Manhattan Beach and Hermosa. While they seem much more active than Redondo, my perception of them is that there isn't as much of the "fun stuff" as compared to 2nd street and downtown LBC. Am I wrong, or am I not giving them a fair shake?

I'm trying to keep my monthly rent maxed out at $1700, but a cool place is always worth a bit more. Thoughts? I appreciate your help. I did some searches, but i didn't really find much comparing the south bay and LBC.

edit: Forgot to include personal details. I'm 24-years-old, male, and single. I make pretty good money doing IT work.

Downtown Long Beach is okay, but Long Beach is very spotty. If you want to be near the beach and action try Santa Monica. With a rent budget of $1700 you should be able to find an decent apartment.

It all depends on "what" you consider fun stuff to do.

Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach are like one big never-ending frat party(in some parts, of course)

Long Beach is more low key with Belmont Shore being the best area for a twentysomething and you also have Huntington Beach not much of a drive if you want more beach fun on the weekends.

So I should be looking at Santa Monica, too? Wouldn't the drive be a bummer?

Santa Monica to Torrance will be going against traffic on the 405 so your commute wouldn't be bad at all.

Belmont Shore is the best. Very upscale but not too uppity.

DT LB is fine. It's more urban so that scares some people. But it has more of a club scene than beach scene like Belmont Shore or the South Bay.
