It's kinda sketchy, but you should be fine if you keep to yourself, etc.

It's not far from Hollywood's large Armenian and Thai communities if your into the diversity hoopla.

That is not a good neighborhood. When I think Western and Santa Monica I think Tiajuana and transvestite hookers which used to be a big problem there back in the 90s until the Koreatown chamber of commerce worked with police to eliminate the "women of the night" walkers. If you can go a bit west of there past Norton you should be okay. Also, the further you get towards Wilshire the better as well.

Now that I have lived here for about 1.5 years I am beginning to get use to the area. I love the fact that it is central. It is close to everything.

And I have been hearing from other people who live in really nice areas like Santa Monica that they always hear gunshots also.

Is that your site? I love your photos, man

I had to laugh out loud reading your observations & remember seeing some outrageous behavior on Santa Monica Blvd near Western. Wild looking transvestites waving at men & young hustlers grabbing their crotchs & flexing. That was once a bizarre prostitution area all the way into West Hollywood. Also lots of drug addicts. I don't think it is that bad anymore but for a young lady to be walking around at night wouldn't be recommended.

"Melrose Hill" has always been a depressing area. Can't image buying a house in that area without realizing that before hand.

My mother bought it as a tear down. She didn't even look at it, realtor talked her into it.

From a commercial property standpoint the area has slowly been moving up for the past 10 years, mostly because of the Armenian and Thai population being comprised of a lot of storeowners. Crimewise I'd say the area is average, not great, but not bad either. Just mind your own business and use common sense and you should be OK.
Personally, I like some of the houses on Melrose Hill.

When the hookers leave, then you know it is unsafe.
But seriously, it may be time to live elsewhere.
When all you deal with is trouble, it works you over and even the good stuff looks bad.
Then your mind gets polluted and no one needs that.
