I lived on Lemon Grove just east of Wilton Place for 7 years, but that was back in the 80s. I loved the apartment! After moving in I found out that my best friend's dad lived in the exact same apartment when he was a child.

Hi! I have a similar question I'd love to consult everyone about. I am considering putting a deposit down on an apartment that is located Virgil Ave at Melrose in East Hollywood. the appeal is the cheap rent and the close proximity to Silverlake. Does anyone know if this area is safe? Any guidance is appreciated.

I lived in this area for 3 years, back in 02-05. Of course, it isn't the best neighborhood. I had street parking, and had my car broken into and a keyboard stolen from the trunk (let's not get into how ignorant I was to leave it there...)- but I lived in an apartment complex where the people looked out for one another. Most of the residents were from South America, (many different countries)- and were very kind people. There were two gentleman who "hung out" on the corner, who I later learned dealt drugs- but I didn't know it at the time and they never bothered me. Late at night was a little sketchy, I did see prostitutes, usually being bothered and harassed- I even remember offering to help a woman whose "customer" was following her, but she declined (I was very, very naive). In any case, I learned that it is not best to wander around at night, or leave expensive things in your car- but these are common sense things of which you are obviously aware. You will be fine. Just be smart, and don't loiter at night.

For the most part, the only "safe" areas of L.A. are the areas that most people can't afford.

L.A. has the smallest middle-class of any major metro area in the country, and my hunch is that it's shrinking even further.

L.A. is second only to Miami in the percentage of residents who dropped out of high school. This contributes to the gang problems and other social ills throughout most of the city.

You are all a bunch of scared cowards. I grew up in that neighborhood and just recently moved up to San Francisco. And not by choice, if it was up to me I'd still be living in my old neighborhood by good old Lemon Grove park. I always walked around 24/7. You boo hoo gentrifiers should get the hell out and move back to your hillbilly south, Midwest and wherever else you're from. Locals only.

East Hollywood is just plain not as safe as the Westerly part. I would even call it a s***hole if I may borrow from President Trump's vocabulary. I try to avoid going East of Crescent Heights. Also as you start traveling down towards the 10 freeway it just gets worse.
