Aloha! I live in Hawaii, but I'm soon going to be living in the CSUN dorms, since I will be going to Columbia College. (Small film school! )
Anyway. I move in mid-august, and am a little nervous about only one thing. My horse. I am bringing him up about a year after I get to Cali, hopefully, but I need to find a good barn.
I ride and train dressage, and have competed successfully for several years. I am looking for a barn where I could hopefully begin riding at when I first arrive in Cali and then eventually bring my horse to.
I am willing to travel up to an hour away from Northridge, maybe a little more if the place is just what I am looking for.

Does anyone have any ideas?
(I'm also willing to do work for the barn, if that is any help...)

- Cassie

Hey Cassie! I am unsure how familiar you are with L.A., but I am familiar with the equestrian community so I'll jump in. L.A. horse training and boarding is on the outskirts of our county, with the exception of the L.A. Equestrian Centre in Burbank, next to the 134 freeway. I'm not sure who the current dressage trainers are there, but you could search for "Cornerstone Dressage" which is the umbrella org. for the discipline there, and oversees its dressage shows. (LAEC is multi-disciplines. Horse zoning is so scarce here, they all double up on the available properties.)

Here's one link for a dressage trainer/dressage barn wherein I know the people involved. They are excellent horsewomen, kind to the horses, funloving enough include riding the surrounding mountain trails as part of the dressage experience, and disciplined enough to specialize in Classical Dressage a la Reiner Klimke. If you pm here on this site I'll tell you their names and barn phone #s. They're in Sand Canyon, about a half hour drive from Northridge along the 118 to the 5 to the 14 if you avoid rush hours.

If you don't need to see your horse every day and consign him or her to fulltime training, Hilda Gurney's own dressage center is in Moorpark, another 45 - 60 minutes away from Northridge.

Most dressage barns here do NOT have schoolmasters: they have clients and their own horses. The only place I've heard of that does is way over an hour away in Acton, but I'm hardly on the circuit.

Hi Cassie,
CSUN is very close to a town called Chatsworth. Lots and Lots of horse bording stables there. The air is cleaner up in the Chatsworth hills. Lots of riding trails and the scenery is very pretty. CSUN is about 10-15 minutes to Chatsworth. I see alot of dressage riders also. I am sure you can look up some of the stables in Chatsworth on the net and ask around. Just a thought.
Good luck to you and your horse!!
