From Woodland Hills to Santa Monica via Topanga Canyon will probably be a long crowded drive too - and high risk as one accident kills your commute. I don't see traffic sensors on PCH between Topanga and Santa Monica but I'd bet traffic southbound is not too good. I am not that familiar with it. It also might depend on where in Santa Monica (east or west) as maybe 405 may be better for the east side. I'm sure others are more familiar with it. I'm just guessing.

Bearable how?

You pick your poison with a commute. For starters, gasoline. $5 a gallon in 6 months. Do you own a hybrid yet?

Second, type of commute. Slow going on a 12 line highway, cheek by jowl, crawling along mile by mile, the minutes of your life ticking away? Or do you take a narrow, 2 lane canyon highway which can be just a bit hairy during bad weather, not to mention people drive it like they think it's lemans and god help you if you go too slow.

The question I'd ask people, is why are they suggesting Woodland Hills vs Encino or Sherman Oaks? It's not like Woodland Hills is going to be that much cheaper rental/cost wise than those other two places.

The original poster's wife works in Northridge. He wanted to live somewhere between Northridge and Santa Monica.

Hi Petrala, thanks for your insights. Friends recommend Woodland Hills for the great schools and the pleasant neighborhoods. But, for me, it is only a choice if the commute through 27 is shorter or equal than Sherman Oaks - Santa Monica through 405.

By the way, my office in Santa Monica is in lincoln st, near santa monica boulevard (8 blocks from the beach), if it makes a difference.

Thanks!
