What exactly is Los Angelos's public transportation system like? From what I understand, it seems like it is not the best or the worst. I am going to be without a liscense for a few months and I don't know a lot of people. I know it is going to be inconvenient. I guess what I really want to know is it possible to get around with public transportation without going broke or being killed, mugged, etc. in l.a? What parts in L.A. would that be in? There is a subway system, isn't there?

Try metro.net or www.bigbluebus.com if you're on the westside

i just came back from vacationing in LA and have found the bigbluebus to be great (I stayed in westchester) and was able to move around between santa monica, venice beach, and century city for only $2.50 all day pass or $0.75 per ride.

Please follow katenik advice. This subject has been debated to death. Long story short: the MTA is horribly unreliable and dirty, the trains are decent but don't service the entire city. The only decent buses are Santa Monica Big Blue and Culver City.

Los Angeles public transportation is the worst. For a city this size, it really is a joke. I don't think they care that much about it because based on the people who really need it, the city doesn't feel they are worth upgrading it to a decent level.
