St. Monica's Catholic Church in Santa Monica was targeted in a brazen burglary Thursday evening, when a group of thieves targeted the church, stealing over $100,000 worth of video equipment the church used to reach followers during the worst day of the coronavirus pandemic.

Very sad -- my grandmother went to this church, and we used to stop and light candles before we headed to J.J Newberry's for lunch.

That’s really sad. I used to live across the street from that church and my friends mother was very involved with it. My mother also used to take us to JJ Newberrys for a hot dog at the counter before going to Sears. Did you also go to Rosevelt elementary? Life was a lot easier then

No, I went to St. Paul's in Westwood. BTW, can you remember what was between Sears and the old mall, where they put the SM Place? I cannot.

It was always a mall - just a older, crappier, indoor mall. The main entrance was on the north side as you crossed over from 3rd street promenade. I think it was actually called SM Place as well.

I remember when Santa Monica Place was new. It was built in 1980, and the anchor stores were Robinson's and The Broadway, the latter to become Macy's.

In the late 90s, we hung out at the food court (teenagers). That was my only real memory of the indoor part of the mall before it was closed.

There was a mall there before 1980? Are you sure? Was it just one story? I can't find any history of it.

Murby, I'm not Catholic or even religious, and I'm definitely not in the habit of defending purchases made by churches - but that comment is unworthy of this particular institution. It is a broad-minded, diverse, generous, welcoming congregation that is very actively involved in outreach to its local communities including the homeless and LGBTQ and others in a vulnerable position (and they have an awesome choir!). The equipment stolen was audio-visual gear used to livestream mass, weddings and funerals for those unable to attend in person, obviously particularly important during the pandemic. It may be located in a wealthy area, but there is no skimming or extravagance going on there.
