Thank you all for the advice! I know that TJ isn't the best part of Mexico, which is why I was wondering if there were alternative options when crossing the CA border. I would be travelling with my boyfriend, but if we do decide to go, we will be extra careful.

You always have some risk when going down there,I have been stopped 3 times by TJ Police and had to fork over 30 or 40 bucks to get them off my back.take the coast route and do not drive into TJ itself or you will be shaken down by the Police.Ensenada boasts a lower crime rate than any major city including Los Angeles.

Is Ensenada a nicer place? Is it drivable from LA?
