Hi all! Does anyone have any advice about travelling to Mexico through LA? We'd like to make a weekend trip, but I'm not sure about routes, cities, hotels, etc. Any advice is appreciated!

5 south all the way to Tijuana, Rosarito, Puerto Nuever.
About 2-3 hours from downtown LA.

My advice would be DON'T GO. There have been some very serious problems in TJ and Ensenada for the past year. Drug wars, assaults, kidnappings, rapes, murders, etc. Not a good time to venture south of the border.

I somewhat agree.

It can be dangerous, but you need to have a little more awareness than when you are visiting an American city.

If you are just exploring the city and beaches within the border area(baja california), I recommend you use taxis. A taxi will even take you as far as rosarito, but itll cost you like 30.

Taxis are much safer than walking or driving around.

15 people were killed in one day in late April in the Tijuana area. I'd be very careful and cautious to say the least. Tourism has dropped upwards to 95% over the last year due to excess violence. This article in the OC Register should help: Travel: Violence in border areas of Mexico prompts new U.S. alert | mexico, year, travel, state, increase - OCRegister.com

That really only applies if you are white.

It applies if you appear American at all. Whether white, black, or even Latino. They can tell the difference between a Chicano and a Mexican.

Just be careful and aware.

I've been to Tijuana 3 times in the last month to have dental work. I haven't had any problem and I see tons of Americans going back across the border when I go home. I'm shopping, I'm strolling around in the touristy areas (that's where my dentist is) and I don't feel he least bit threatened. If it's dangerous there it's not real apparent.

Yeah, its not like they're robbing people left and right as they cross the line, lol.
People are really scared of Mexico, and they kind of hype it up.

BUt things HAVE been happening to tourists, so I do think anyone going over needs to be extra aware of their surroundings, and not do anything dumb like drift to the sidestreets of the main drags.

Plus the war between drug gangs is making a lot of news, so that scares people too.
