So STP just played our outdoor arena here in Philly last night (they sounded AMAZING if anyone is an STP fan), but this was just the first major stop on their new tour, so I looked to see when they were going to be in LA (since I am moving next week and would love to see them again).

Turns out they have 3 CA dates - Berkeley, San Diego, and...Paso Robles. (WTF?) I looked it up on the map, and the only upside I can find is that it seems to be about halfway between LA and the SF area (but theyre already playing Berkeley, so that doesn't make sense to me either).

I guess my question is, are more high-profile bands electing to play 'around' LA instead of in it (for cost purposes, etc)? Has anyone driven to Paso Robles for a show before? I would think that between the Staples Center, Honda Center, Hollywood Bowl, Nokia Theater, etc., that bands wouldnt need to retreat 3 hours away to get a good deal.

Ok, so the whole 'Paso Robles' thing was off of the back of one of the tour t-shirts that I saw last night. However I just checked Ticketmaster (to see what kind of venue there was in Paso Robles) and it turns out that STP is actually playing the Hollywood Bowl instead so...awesome.

They are playing at the Midstate Fair in Paso Robles on July 26.
California Mid State Fair

The Midstate Fair pulls in a lot of concerts during its 2 week run. Also playing this year are performers ranging from Matchbox 20 to Toby Keith to Boz Scaggs.

Tickets are here Vallitix - Home

Thanks - I guess maybe they added the Hollywood show after the shirts were made up or something.

That 'mystery' aside, do you guys still find that bands are electing to play elsewhere in the area, as opposed to the major venues that are nationally known (Staples, Hollywood Bowl, Nokia)? I know in this area that more and more bands are playing in Atlantic City as opposed to Philly (despite the fact that AC lacks the major 15000+ seat venues that Philly has), choosing to take the big bucks that come with playing at a casino. As a matter of fact, STP only played last night as part of a festival show, and when they come back in August on their own, they are playing in AC.

With other viable venues in the LA area (Honda, Home Depot, etc) that aren't as 'centrally located' and certainly dont have the same name-recognition, do you find that more bands are opting to play in those places?

Bands are discovering that there is a lot of money to be made in California outside LA and SF.

For example here in Fresno we got discovered for tours about 5 or 6 years ago. Since then we have seen Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Tool, and many others.

Default STP in Paso ... kinda weird, I know

As a Paso Roblan myself, I understand the "weirdness" of it all. Two years ago Velvet Revolver was here and last year Aerosmith was here (sold out in 1 day)

Paso is a touristy wine country .. but we make a lot of money on the fair. I know the Fair Board has been trying to get bigger rock names, and I guess it is happening. Plus, the fair is a huge draw for the Valley people (Fresno, Baskerfield) and those who don't want to drive to SF or LA.

The only thing I'm wondering about is isn't Scott Weiland supposed to go to jail?

It was a 2-day sentence I'm pretty sure, and he served it prior to the show I saw 'to get it out of the way' (in between the Columbus, OH and Camden, NJ shows) - at least thats what I think I remember them saying on the radio here.

If you're a fan at all, I strongly suggest going to the fair to see them - they sounded amazing, but who knows how long it will last...
