My understanding is that you can't get that close to it. It gated off Maybe some other poster will correct me if I'm wrong.

the hollywood sign is a local historic treasure, and even if i knew how to get up close on foot, i wouldn't reveal it. public access (which would doubtless include fools who wish to tag it with graffiti) is not in the best interest of preserving it for posterity, and the fewer people who know the pedestrian route, the better.

that said, you can drive up beachwood canyon to the top of the hill and get close enough to create the illusion that you can reach out and touch it. that satisfies most tourists.

It's gated. Go up Beachwood which is as close as you can get.

Go to Griffith Park Observatory; from there the sign is relatively easy to see (I don't think it is all that, but that's my opinion). Then, walk around the observatory, enjoy the exhibits, and take-in the view of Downtown LA.

I've heard rumors that you will be swarmed by SWAT like G-men if you trespass anywhere near the sign. I don't believe it, but it is the urban legend. Apparently there are all sorts of motion sensors around the sign, and these guys come swooping down on you, LOL. I call BS, but I'm not at a point in my life to go and prove it to be false.
