I am thinking about applying for a job at the Mojave airport. What is the area like? What is the school district like? What is the avg. price of a home, to purchase, and to rent (3bdrm)? Any other thoughts anyone has on the area would be much appreciated. Thanks

Mojave is desert and surrounding areas for homes would be Victorville, Apple Valley, Adelanto (closest areas). Avg home price is now $350K on up for decent housing. Rents run in excess of $1 grand a month. Stay away from Adelanto, its less expensive but more on the ghetto side of things.

I will be coming to California in two years time from England to do japanned furniture for clients in Beverely Hills. I will be starting with a low financial base but need to live remotish as my cats have never encountered a road before. Is it possible to live out in the Mojave desert at a reasonable rent?
Or if you can think of another place within a range of Beverly Hills where I could live in a rural area?
Very grateful for your comments,
Sara

Personally, I like it out there (I've been nicknamed the Desert Rat), but if you don't like small-town living and gossip, you probably won't enjoy it out there too much.

I prefer to live a distance from neighbours; safer for my cats and not having to get involved as you say in small-town life, also just peace and quiet.

You can always make friends in a range around you.

I wonder if there are many houses available for rent around the desert outside these communities? Also what such a dwelling would be like; how many rooms, how does that property get water and electricity etc?

You might try Acton which is about 40 miles north of Los Angeles. It has a nice rural atmosphere.

@sarasara

rolling hills/rancho palos verdes can be secluded, but its not remote and its very expensive.

if travelling is rare, you could try a community past Barstow like Yermo or Halloran Springs
