I grew up in Pasadena (San Gabriel Valley) and lately have encountered a few people from SFV who have given me an attitude about being from SGV. I know the stereotype of SF Valley is to be snobby and think they're better than everyone else, but I never really thought about it. I recently told this girl from Thousand Oaks I was from Pasadena and she said "I thought you'd be kind of ghetto." WHAT?!?!

When I tell people I'm from Pasadena, and they're from SFV, I get the, "Oh, sorry" look. I don't get it? Why is SGV looked down upon by them? Is that a known thing I just learned?!

SGV folks are not looked down upon. The problem is that you were talking to a girl from Thousand Oaks (T.O.). They just feel bad because they WISH they were valley people. People who live in T.O. all come to the valley to hang out because its soooo much better than where they live.

Huh, that is bizarre. Pasadena was sort of run-down in the 1980's. Is it possible that the people you are talking to are still referring back to that era in their minds?

The girl I was talking to was 21. So, doubt she remembers Pasadena from the '80s. :-)

OK, well then it just shows her ignorance. Pasadena is NICE ... pity her and move on.

I dont think there is a stereotype that SFV residents think they are better than everyone else. Sounds like this person thinks she is better than everyone else. She has a lot to learn and that attitude will be laughed at by several.

just young minded girls being young minded girls.

and anyone that thinks pasadena is ghetto is pretty ignorant. even "in the 80's". its not. and the rest of the SGV, aside from it being a bit asian, i dont know what other generalizations one can make about it.

as for SFV people? they are ones to talk. when i think of the valley it seems like a very hot, far, dirty place. of course its isnt all nastiness, but the idea of the SFV as valley girl capital is gone. i think most people, and from whati get from posters here, regard the valley as two places. either really dirty or really clean. both being very hot and far from LA.

besides anyone who really thinks less of you for where you live is pretty shallow. well young minded and shallow.

most times living in pasadena is seen as pretty good.

I wouldn't consider Thousand Oaks to be even part of the SFV. It's out in Ventura County...the conejo valley i think it's called out there. It's more suburbs, yuppy and kind of rural at the same time. The gal you talked to may have just been a snob who looks down on everyone.

So much of the SFV has gotten to be pretty bad over the last few years that I don't think anyone from there would/should be talking down to people from Pasadena or the SGV. We lived in Pasadena about 10 years ago, and if anything, we probably looked down on people from the san fernando valley (just kidding!!). Pasadena has so much more "culture" with the restaurants, shopping, arts, theater, etc. And I don't think anyone would call South Pasadena or San Marino ghetto at all. We absolutely loved living in Pasadena and still go quite often even with our little kids.

Thanks for your input, guys. I didn't know if I was out of the loop on something. To actually be made to feel embarrassed of my hometown bothered me.

The people don't care for the city and trash it, maybe because they weren't born here and have no pride.

Anyways, it seems....hot, desolate, unforgiving, Hispanic (see: Reseda), pallid, generic, bland...I'm glad I don't live there.
