Not all parts of Compton are full of gangs. Most areas are just low-income African-American families that are caught in a bad situation. I truly feel bad for the families in Compton. Usually, it's just an African-American mother walking with her little kids. Then, the gang members open fire on a nearby person, but they have horrible aim and end up killing the little girl. It's a very bad situation in that sense, but if you want to talk to someone, just drive around like a normal person. Look for a normal looking African-American woman with her kids and she will be fine to talk to. Just don't do anything to maker her mad at you b/c then she might call over her husband and he will hurt you. Make sure to ask her if she is comfortable with the questions before you start interviewing her.

Not a good idea. You'll come across as a tourist trying to entertain yourself at their expense. If you absolutely have to do something like this call up a respected member of the local clergy and explain what you're doing and see if you can get an escort.

But seriously, think twice about this. Parts of Compton can be as dangerous as an Iraqi war zone.

This is classic and ranks as one of my favorite City-Data responses ever.

But if the OP is serious, going through an intermediary (like a youth counselor or community activist) is probably the best way to do it. Some stray, random dude, not from a major media organization, asking questions and taking pictures isn't going to go down well in any neighborhood these days, be it Beverly Hills, Compton or somewhere in between.

The Father Greg Boyle and his Homeboy Industries suggestion is a good one though isn't he more involved in East LA than Compton? Maybe he's expanded his operation?

Can anyone confirm this

I heard that several U.S presidents have resided in Compton. If its good enough for the n.1 man in the U.S out of 310,000,000 others Compton really cant be that bad, so it has its fair bit of crime but so does everywhere, i come from Suburban London and trust me i've seen everything! Just be street smart. Stay out of alleys at night, dont drive around the place like some kind of pimp, with a big flashy car and you should be fine.

hello! not a good idea!!!! do not TRY to find a woman alone with her kids...even if her husband is not around, someone may see her talking to another man, and she may get "in trouble" later for speaking to you. i only say that because, been there done that....jealous controling guys are no good! please dont put any women in that situation, unless they are friendly with you to begin with

Isn't it a shame that a places like this that are so dangerous are allowed to exist here in the USA? We are claim to be the greatest country in the world. Yet, we can't walk down the street in certain neighborhoods. There are also entire cities and towns where it is not safe to even walk down the street.
How can people become so savagely territorial and uncivilized?
I've spent several years living Germany and never felt threatened to walk anywhere.
I've also live in Finland, where I, my wife and daughter had no fear whatsoever, to walk in any part of any city, at any time of the day or night.
I've never had any trouble or fear in any Scandinavian country.
Sure there are a few drunks here and there but they are more or less harmless. The police are friendly and helpful - unlike many of our police officers, who love to taze or pepper spray someone when given the opportunity. I've worked as a police officer and know first hand how sadistic some officers are.

This whole thread is COMEDY !!! some people watch way too much TV.
You'll be fine. I hav ebeen driving through these neighborhoods for years NEVER had any trouble. It has alot to do with how you carry yourself, Do act like a victim you won't become one.

my only advice, don't wear red or blue (Crips or Bloods). be polite and friendly. There some bad ass neighborhoods that even I wouldn't go to but if you stay on the main drags you won't encounter any problem at all.

Don't watch the movie Grand Canyon with Danny Glover

The funny thing is, the city you and I live in actually has higher crime rates than Compton (WPB is number 14 most dangerous, Compton is 15th).

Scary
