Hello all,
I was just curious how the job market for graphic designers is out there? What is the cost of living in the area as well? To rent... I am 26 years old, single and I have been debating a big move... I want to be well equipped when I make the decision between Denver, Sacramento and LA. (I am moving from Naperville, IL) I dont really care if I am a part of the city life, I just want to be somewhere nice where it can't be -14 for a week straight. I am looking for any and all advice one can give me!
Thanks!

Well I havent been to Sacremento but I have lived in both Denver & LA. The weather in Colorado is definitely milder than some places but it can be schzophrenic at times. Also, the job market for creative type jobs is a bit thin. You can find yourself stuck in a bad job for awhile simply because there are no other places to go to if you want to stay in Denver. LA on the other hand has lots of opportunities but it is very competetive. Plan on paying your dues. It is way more expensive to live there. The weather is amazing though I must admit. If you aren't used to big city living, LA will be a pretty big shock for the first 6 months at least. The people aren't that down to earth, and everything seems to want something from you. Atleast that was my experience. If you're looking for a groovy place to do graphic art that isn't too cold maybe look at Seattle or Northern Cali.

You should take a trip out to L.A. before taking the plunge. It's so diverse that I don't know where to direct you except for telling you my favorite spots to live. People on this forum will tell you of crime, gangs, pollution, "those" people (other races), traffic and high cost of housing but being from Chicago you already know about those things. You'll love the weather. You'll love it. Beach cities stay cool in the summer, inland gets hotter and smoggier. I may be stepping out of my league here but I believe L.A. is the 2nd best place to come for your line of work. Feel free to ask any and all questions you want. I'm a 3rd generation Angeleno.

Denver is nice looking but if you're looking to escape cold weather...I think you know how cold it gets in Denver. It's very pretty. A friend of mine from L.A. moved there and she loves it and plans on staying. Sacramento is a hole. Ugly town with terrible weather. Summers are awful, winters are choked in fog. Just my opinion.

Sacramento will feel like Nashville, very rural, dry summers, low 40's to high 60's in Winter.

Denver, Cold, Beautiful Landscape, job market thin, somewhat friendly people, close mountains, summer thunderstorms, religious and secular.

Los Angeles, where I reside, great place for someone from Tenessee, this place would be way different for you. The weather the same as Sacramento. There is a lot, alot of diversity here.

You need to read these postings more carefully before you start typing away. Go back to the original post and you'll see that the writer is coming from Naperville, Illinois, not Nashville, Tennessee. (Sorry, but I used to be a transcriptionist and am used to proofreading; it's like second nature to me.)
